New case of renal problems related to tainted milk
**************************************************

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health this afternoon (September 25) received notification from the Hospital Authority of a confirmed case of renal problems related to the consumption of melamine tainted milk products.

This is the fifth confirmed case reported to the CHP.

The case involved a 10-year-old boy living in Hong Kong. He also had travel history to the Mainland.

It was reported that he had history of consumption of milk products adulterated with melamine in Hong Kong and during his stay on the Mainland. He has no symptoms of renal problems.

His parents took him to a Hospital Authority special assessment centre today for a medical check-up and renal stones were found in his left kidney. He has been admitted to Princess Margaret Hospital for treatment and is in stable condition.

To 1pm today, the CHP hotline 2125 1133 had received 5,437 enquiries from members of the public since it was set up on September 21.

ˇ§A total of 1,666 callers claimed that they or their children had consumed milk products which were confirmed to have been adulterated with melamine, and 506 of the affected people, 270 males and 236 females aged from one to 71, claimed to have symptoms of renal problems including dysuria and changes in the frequency of urination.

ˇ§They have been advised to seek medical attention as soon as possible to ascertain if they are suffering from renal disease,ˇ¨ the spokesman said.

The remaining 3,771 callers had no history of exposure to melamine adulterated milk products and just asked for general health advice.

The CHP hotline, which operates from 9am to 5pm daily, caters for individuals who have consumed milk products contaminated with melamine or those who are experiencing renal symptoms.
