Applications open for Beat Drugs Fund special funding exercise
******************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Secretariat of the Beat Drugs Fund Association:

A special funding exercise for the Beat Drugs Fund is open for applications from today (September 22) until November 17. Organisations and individuals may submit applications to the Secretariat of the Beat Drugs Fund during this period.

The project theme for this special funding exercise is "Professional Training Programme for Family Doctors". The successful applicant should design and run a professional training programme for family doctors, produce a manual for them, and maintain a bilingual web-based version of the training materials and the manual for online access and self-learning.

The training programme will enhance family doctors' awareness of the drug problem, equip them with the necessary knowledge about drug abuse and the skills to screen, advise or refer patients who have drug abuse problems to the relevant treatment services, hence widening the community network for early intervention.

The manual will serve as a handy and useful reference for family doctors to provide screening and brief intervention services. The long-term goal is to get drug abuse screening and intervention into the routine practice and healthcare setting of family doctors.

Detailed information including the format, duration and budget is set out in the project brief attached to the Guide to Application for applicants' reference. The guide and the application form are available on the website of the Narcotics Division, Security Bureau (www.nd.gov.hk/beat.htm). They can also be collected in person at the Secretariat of the Beat Drugs Fund Association (30/F, High Block) and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Drug InfoCentre (Roof Floor, Low Block) at Queensway Government Offices, 66 Queensway; all Public Enquiry Service Centres of the Home Affairs Department; and the District Social Welfare Offices of the Social Welfare Department.

Enquiries are welcome by phone at 2867 2737 or 2867 2286; by fax at 2810 1790; or via email to sbeon4@sb.gov.hk.

The Beat Drugs Fund was set up by the Government in 1996 with a capital base of $350 million to fund worthwhile projects that can contribute to the fight against drug abuse in Hong Kong.

In November 2007, the Beat Drugs Fund Association established a special funding scheme to support the measures proposed by the Task Force on Youth Drug Abuse.
