The Secretary for Justice, Mr Wong Yan Lung, SC, today (September 19) visited Kowloon City District to get first-hand updates on the development of the district and its fight crime efforts. He also exchanged views with community leaders on government administration.
Following briefings by the District Officer (Kowloon City), Miss Winky So, and the District Commander (Kowloon City), Mr Lau Yip-shing, on their respective work, the Secretary for Justice called on the Merchants Support for Rehabilitated Offenders Committee and was given an introduction on the "One Company One Job Campaign". This campaign has been actively promoted by the committee to offer employment opportunities to rehabilitated offenders.
The campaign appeals for public concern for rehabilitated offenders by eliminating discrimination and misunderstanding. It helps them to re-integrate into society and lead a new life. The committee carries out publicity and promotion initiatives to encourage every company to employ one rehabilitated offender.
The second leg of the visit was the Yang Memorial Methodist Social Service Homantin Integrated Centre for Youth Development, where Mr Wong was briefed on the centre's outreach programmes and a recent survey on youth drug abuse. He also chatted with two young men to learn about their drug-addition history and rehabilitation.
Mr Wong said he was pleased to know that with the proactive counselling of social workers, one of the young men had given up drugs for more than a year.
Mr Wong then had a meeting with members of the District Council and District Fight Crime Committee to exchange views on issues of mutual concern. He also took the opportunity to urge those in the district to support the "Path Builders" campaign recently introduced by the Task Force on Youth Drug Abuse.
