Young inmates and released supervisees of Lai King Correctional Institution (LKCI) were today (September 17) presented with academic and vocational certificates at a ceremony in recognition of their achievements.

A total of 28 LKCI inmates, among them many who had been discharged from the institution, obtained a total of 60 passes including 40 distinctions and credits in the City and Guilds examinations, the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination, the LCCI International Qualifications examinations and the examinations organised by the Clothing Industry Training Authority.

They achieved good results in academic qualifications in Chinese and English computer applications, Mathematics, Chinese Language, English Language, Book-keeping, Clothing Product Development, Pattern Making, as well as Food & Beverage Service.

Speaking at the certificate presentation ceremony, the Superintendent of LKCI, Ms Elana Chan said: "Our inmates have accomplished their studies successfully and with perseverance. They have proven that they are as capable of attaining good academic results as others. This will give them a good foundation for their future."

She encouraged the inmates to further pursue their aspirations and not to be complacent.

"The success of the inmates is greatly built on the continuous support of their families and guidance of every instructor of the institution," Ms Chan added.

Also taking part in the ceremony were parents of the inmates, representatives of community organisations and celebrities as well as senior officers of the Correctional Services Department (CSD).

Situated at 16 Wa Tai Road, Kwai Chung, CSD's LKCI has a capacity of 240 penal places for young female offenders aged from 14 to under 21.

The department provides half-day compulsory education programmes and half-day vocational training for young offenders under age 2l. Guidance and assistance are also in place for adult offenders who participate in studies on a voluntary basis.
