SHA congratulates Hong Kong team on winning Paralympic medals (with photos)

     The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, today (September 16) commended and congratulated the Hong Kong delegation for winning two gold medals and one bronze medal in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games.

     Yu Chui-yee and Fan Pui-shan of the Hong Kong wheelchair fencing team scored a gold medal and a bronze medal respectively at the women's individual foil event, while Chan Yui-chong captured a gold medal in the women's individual epee event.

    "The achievements of the athletes are the result of their hard work and tenacity over the years. We are all very proud of their excellent performance," Mr Tsang said.

     So far Hong Kong has won a total of 10 medals, comprising five gold, two silver and three bronze.

     Mr Tsang visited the "China Story" exhibition in Beijing Olympic Park this morning. The exhibition, co-organised by the Beijing Organising Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad and the Ministry of Culture, features the theme of intangible cultural heritage, and traditional, ethnic and folk culture. The Hong Kong Museum of History also participated in this exhibition, with displays on traditional Chinese festivals in Hong Kong.

     Mr Tsang then watched the Hong Kong wheelchair fencing team competing at the National Convention Centre, and went to the National Stadium to support Hong Kong athlete Yu Chun-lai to compete in the women's 100 metres event in the evening.

     He will attend the closing ceremony of the Paralymic Games in Beijing tomorrow and return to Hong Kong the next day.
