An exhibition to promote public interest in and knowledge of sports science will be opened tomorrow (August 8) at the Hong Kong Science Museum in celebration of the opening of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the co-hosting of the Equestrian Events in Hong Kong.
Entitled "Sports and Health Exhibition - New Concepts and New Technology in a Modern Society", the exhibition is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences Society, and was organised by the Hong Kong Science Museum and the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences. The exhibition will run at the Science Museum from tomorrow until October 1 and at the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences from October 6 to December 31.
Regular exercise is considered to play an important part in reducing the risk of ischaemic heart disease, diabetes mellitus and colon cancer. It can also prevent obesity and lifestyle diseases. Participation in sports has thus become increasingly popular with the introduction of new technologies in sport facilities. However, on the down side, it has also given rise to sports-related injuries.
To enable the public to have a better understanding of the latest sports technologies, the "Sports and Health" exhibition features a range of displays and videos on the development of sports medicine and sports science in Hong Kong, including different types of training equipment and the various methods used to help athletes improve their performance. Visitors will be able to learn how the current technologies are used in measuring fitness and physiological responses in athletes. Some of them are so easy to operate that they can even be incorporated for use in daily life. Hands-on exhibits will be available for visitors to test their body flexibility and assess their muscular strength.
A comprehensive "Virtual Clinic" database will provide information on common types of sports injuries and their treatment. Other exhibits include first-aid equipment used for emergency handling of sports injuries. Apart from regular exercise, a balanced diet is also important for healthy living. Visitors are advised to follow the food pyramid guide for food selection and plan their meals through an interactive game, "Food Exchange Chart".
To coincide with the exhibition, a rescue demonstration by the Auxiliary Medical Services will be held at the Lower Pizza of the Science Museum on Sunday (August 10). First aid equipment and rescue vehicles will also be on display along with a panel exhibition and marching band performance.
The Science Museum is located at 2 Science Museum Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East. It opens from 1pm to 9pm from Monday to Wednesday and on Fridays, and from 10am to 9pm on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. It is closed on Thursdays (except public holidays).
