Grace period for adopting helpers' minimum wage extended
********************************************************

A government spokesman announced today (August 6) that the end date of the grace period for employers of foreign domestic helpers to adopt the previous minimum allowable wage has been postponed from today to tomorrow (August 7) because of the tropical cyclone.

The new minimum allowable wage for foreign domestic helpers of $3,580 was announced on July 9 and has been applicable to employment contracts signed on or after July 10. According to the established grace period practice, employment contracts signed on or before July 9 at a wage level not lower than the previous minimum wage of $3,480 per month would still be processed by the Immigration Department if these applications reached the Immigration Department within the grace period.
