Public consultation on detailed proposals of competition law ends soon
************************************************************

The Government today (July 21) invited people to give their views on detailed proposals for a competition law before the current consultation exercise ends on August 5.

A Commerce and Economic Development Bureau spokesman said the Government would take views of the public into account when designing a competition law which would be suitable for Hong Kong.

"The Government will carefully consider the views received before determining the way forward," the spokesman said.

The bureau launched the three-month public consultation exercise on detailed proposals for a cross-sector competition law in early May.

The consultation paper covers key areas that could form the basis of a competition law, including the proposed regulatory structure, types of conduct that would be prohibited, penalties that would apply for infringing the law, the right to take private action, and criteria and mechanisms for granting exemptions and exclusions from the application of the law.

"We encourage stakeholders to submit their views and comments before the August 5 deadline, either by email to competition@cedb.gov.hk, by fax: 2877 5650, or by post to Level 29, One Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Hong Kong for attention of Division 2, Commerce, Industry and Tourism Branch," the spokesman said.

The consultation document can be downloaded from the website of the Commerce, Industry and Tourism Branch of the Commerce and Economic Development Bureau, www.cedb.gov.hk/citb.
