Drug seizure at Tai Lam Centre for Women
****************************************

The Correctional Services Department (CSD) was committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for everyone in its custody, a spokesperson of the department said today (July 14).

ˇ§Every measure was taken by the CSD to prevent the smuggling of dangerous drugs into, and eradicate them in, correctional institutions,ˇ¨ the spokesperson said.

The comments followed a case of dangerous drugs swallowed by a remand who later discharged them in her stool.

The 25-year-old remand, surnamed Chak, was admitted to Tai Lam Centre for Women on July 9 on a charge of possession of dangerous drugs.

Acting on information that Chak might have swallowed some drugs before her admission, CSD officers put her in an isolation cell for close observation.

Officers found in Chak's stool a total of six tablets of suspected heroin wrapped in plastic sheets on July 11 and 12.

Investigations by the CSD into whether more dangerous drugs are still concealed in Chakˇ¦s body are continuing.

The case has been reported to Police.

The spokesperson said there were 102 seizures of dangerous drugs last year (2007), with the seizures mainly in the reception centres.
