Two contractors fined for violation of safety rules

    International Kum Fai Construction & Engineering Company Limited and Honest (C.K.) Limited were fined $20,000 and $18,000 respectively at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Court today (July 7) for violation of Regulation 38B(1) and 38B(1A) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.

    The case involved a fatal accident which occurred on November 17, 2006, at a construction site in Yau Tong, in which a worker fell to his death from a height of over two metres.

    According to Regulation 38B(1) and 38B(1A) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, the contractors shall take adequate steps to prevent a person on the site from falling from a height of two metres or more. Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000 and imprisonment for 12 months.
