Organised by the Hong Kong Dance Federation, the "Bauhinia Cup Hong Kong Dance Championship" and the "Junior Bauhinia Cup Hong Kong Dance Championship" are both open competitions for dancers in Hong Kong. The competitions explore new directions for dance as an art form and provide opportunities for local dancers to show their creativity and talent.
Winners of the competitions will join professional dance groups from the Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau in a cultural exchange programme to set new benchmarks for dance in the Pearl River Delta area.
This year, the competitions will be held in July and the performance to be given by winners will be at 7.30pm on August 2 and 3 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall. Guest performing groups include the Guangzhou Song and Dance Ensemble, Graduate Students from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, the Regina Dance Group of Associacao de Dancas de Macau (for Saturday's performance only) and the Hong Kong Ballet (for Sunday's performance only).
Founded in 1978, the Hong Kong Dance Federation carries forward the art of dance, encouraging and expediting dance development in Hong Kong as well as promoting cultural exchange. The federation, which has 150 group members and over 600 individual members, organises the "Hong Kong Dance Expo", the "CSTD Kangaroo Cup Dance Competition" and the "Summer Youth Dance Camp". It has also taken part in major events to celebrate National Day, the anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR and the equestrianism competition at the Olympic Games 2008.
The "Bauhinia Cup Hong Kong Dance Championship 2008" winners' performances are presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
