Aloha! Come and experience the ALOHA spirit and Hawaiian culture at the Hawaiian Family Festival this summer without leaving Hong Kong.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the "Hawaiian Family Festival: From ALOHA to LOHAS" is part of this summer's International Arts Carnival. The programme comprises two parts: ALOHA Hoku (meaning star) Gala and ALOHA Ohana (meaning family) Play-fair, to be held in July at North District Town Hall, Tai Po Civic Centre, Yuen Long Theatre and Tuen Mun Town Hall.
Two of Hawaii's contemporary music legends, Nathan Aweau and Nohelani Cypriano, will bring the romance of Polynesian culture to local audiences at the family festival. Accompanied by Hawaiian instruments and mesmerising hula dancers, they will conjure up a delightful picture of a laidback tropical island lifestyle.
Nathan Aweau is renowned for his charismatic voice and extraordinary falsetto. A three-time winner of Hawaii's Male Vocalist of the Year award, his repertoire is richly diverse. Aweau will perform on July 19 at North District Town Hall and on July 20 at Tai Po Civic Centre, with local performing group Oasis Dance Centre sharing the stage. In addition, local singer-songwriters Chet Lam and Khalil Fong and his father Les Fong will be the special guests on July 19 and July 20 respectively.
Singer, pianist and composer Nohelani Cypriano is a leading figure in the Hawaiian music scene, whose powerful vocals have won her the Na Hoku Hanohano Award (Hawaiian Grammy) four times. Accompanied by her wonderful musicians, hula dancers and Hong Kong's Mey Jen Tillyer, she will give performances on July 26 and 27 at Yuen Long Theatre and Tuen Mun Town Hall respectively.
The performances will be complemented by a series of fun-filled activities under the ALOHA Ohana Play-fair for families in which participants can learn from Ali'is (chiefs) about the history and culture of Hawaii through music, dance and crafts.
