The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (June 20) the June 2008 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Composite Employment Estimates 2007", "Development of Trade in Services of Hong Kong" and "The Profile of Hong Kong Population Analysed by District, 2007" are included.
"Composite Employment Estimates 2007"
In the study of employment statistics, there is a common problem arising from the discrepancies observed between employment data obtained from establishment-based surveys, which refer to occupied posts in firms, and those data obtained from household surveys, which refer to persons employed. In Hong Kong, this issue is tackled through the compilation of a set of composite employment estimates (CEE) which reconcile, under a designated statistical framework, the results obtained from the household-based General Household Survey and the establishment-based Survey of Employment and Vacancies.
In 2007, the overall employment was 3 496 500, larger than that in the previous year by 2.5%. The "Import and export trade" was still the largest industry sector in terms of employment. It employed 563 600 persons or 16.1% of overall employment. The next largest industry sectors were the "Other community, social and personal services", engaging 542 200 persons or 15.5% employment share, and the "Wholesale and retail trades", engaging 363 500 persons or 10.4%.
This feature article provides the CEE figures for 2002 to 2007. It also gives an account of the characteristics of CEE and briefly discusses the differences and usage of the CEE vis-a-vis the other employment figures.

"Development of Trade in Services of Hong Kong"
The importance of service industries has increased gradually along with the structural change of the Hong Kong economy in recent years. Being an open economy, trade in services (TIS) in Hong Kong has been gaining significance in the past decade. In response to the demand for statistics on TIS, C&SD has started releasing detailed TIS statistics by type of services and country/territory on an annual basis since July 2002.
This feature article gives a brief account of the framework for compiling TIS statistics for Hong Kong, and presents the major results for 2006.

"The Profile of Hong Kong Population Analysed by District, 2007"
C&SD annually compiles statistics on the demographic and socio-economic characteristics of the population by District Council district based on data collected from the General Household Survey. This feature article provides an analysis on the size and selected characteristics of the population at mid-2007 at the District Council district level. It aims to give readers a better understanding on the profile of the population in different districts of Hong Kong.
For enquiries about this feature article, please call the General Household Survey Section (2), C&SD (Tel: 2887 5506).
Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables.
