The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, will head for Yunnan to receive a set of dinosaur fossils on behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government from the People¡¦s Government of Yunnan Province.
The gift will be presented by the Governor of Yunnan Province, Mr Qin Guangrong, at a ceremony to be held at 10.30am on Sunday (June 22) at the Lufeng World Dinosaur Valley, Chuxiong Zhou, Yunnan.
The offer, a dinosaur species from the Lufeng Series, was endorsed by the relevant Mainland authority in April. The fossil, 7.7 metres in length and 2.2m in height, is believed to be of a herbivorous dinosaur that existed 200 million years ago during the Jurassic period.
This is the first time that a dinosaur fossil is being given to a place outside the Mainland of China. The Hong Kong Government plans to exhibit the fossil at the Hong Kong Science Museum.
Mr Tsang will then leave for Beijing from Yunnan on Sunday (June 22) evening. He will officiate at the opening ceremony of ¡§Beijing - 2008 Olympic Cultural Activities and Hong Kong and Macao Arts Festival cum 2008 Hong Kong and Macao Visual Arts Exhibition¡¨ at the China Millennium Monument, Beijing, on Monday (June 23).
