Government reports on Tai O situation (with video)

    Government departments reported on the latest situation in the Tai O area in a press briefing today (June 14).

    The press briefing was chaired by Islands District Officer Mr Byron Lam. Also present at the briefing were representatives from Highways Department, Water Supplies Department and Geotechnical Engineering Office.

    Speaking at the press briefing, Mr Lam said the conditions of flooding and landslide in Tai O had not worsened. Geotechnical Engineering Office had so far identified 31 houses which were affected by dangerous slopes. All of the 12 families or 22 people had resettled voluntarily. Six of the families involving 13 people resided at temporary public housing units at Lung Tin Estate, Tai O.

    Meanwhile, among the families who wished to move out of their homes temporarily, two families involving ten people moved to Lung Tin Estate, while one other family of four members moved to Yat Tung Estate, Tung Chung. Five families involving eight people would move into Lung Tin Estate tonight.  Four other families involving 18 people would move into Yat Tung Estate tomorrow.

    On water supply, the supply of stream water to Shum Wat Village and San Tau Village had resumed. 

    Repair works on Keung Shan Road were in progress. The Highways Department had provided a temporary traffic lane on Keung Shan Road for passage of engineering vehicles, emergency rescue vehicles and vehicles for transporting relief materials. Tai O Road had been fully opened for public use. Shum Wat Road connecting Ngong Ping and Shum Wat had been opened for emergency use. Also, the village road from Shum Wat to Tung Chung Hau Wong Temple had been reopened to village vehicles.

    CAS members and volunteers from the disciplinary forces visited villages in Tai O and provided assistance to villagers when necessary.

    Residents who were affected by the rainstorms and had financial difficulties may apply to the Islands District Office for emergency relief fund.
