Film director and producer Johnnie To today (June 13) donated his award-winning trophies and photos he had taken to the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) for permanent preservation.
Speaking at today's "Johnnie To Donation Ceremony and Seminar", the Assistant Director of the Leisure and Cultural Services (Heritage and Museums), Dr Louis Ng Chi-wa, pointed out that films of different generations not only marked the history of film development, but also reflected the changes of society and had become part of Hong Kongˇ¦s cultural heritage.
Since its inception, the HKFA has received staunch support from individuals, the film industry and the public.
Dr Ng urged filmmakers and the public, in following To's donation to the HKFA, to be generous in supporting the preservation of Hong Kong's cinematic culture and heritage.
From TV producer to film director, Johnnie To has made films of different genres. With Milkyway Image, he has been nurturing new directorial and scriptwriting talent with a vision of sustaining film heritage.
To has won many film awards, and the donated items comprise 39 trophies from award-winning films, including the 2004 Hong Kong Film Awards - Best Director: "PTU"; the 2004 Taipei Golden Horse Awards - Best Director and 2005 Changchun Film Festival - Golden Deer Award: "Breaking News"; 2006 Catalonian International Film Festival - Carnet Jove Jury Award and the Hong Kong Directors' Guild - Best Director: "Exiled"; the 1999 Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards - Best Director: "A Hero Never Dies" together with photos taken by him at various filming locations.
Part of the donated items including trophies and photos will be on display at the first floor of the HKFA from now to July 13.
