Public health team returns from Sichuan (with photos)

    The Hong Kong SAR's public health professional team deployed to Sichuan last week to provide assistance in the earthquake affected areas returned to Hong Kong this afternoon (May 27).

    The Permanent Secretary for Food and Health (Food), Mrs Stella Hung; the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Cheuk Wing-hing; and the Deputy Director of Health, Dr Gloria Tam, greeted the team at the airport.

    ¡§On behalf of the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to you all for what you have done in assisting the people in the affected areas. Your selfless devotion is much appreciated,¡¨ Mrs Hung said.

    She also conveyed the thankfulness of the Secretary for the Civil Service, Ms Denise Yue, to team members.

    The 15-member team, led by Principal Medical and Health Officer, Dr Mok Chiu-yau, comprised three doctors from the Department of Health, 10 health inspectors, foreman and workman grade officers from the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and two chemists from the Water Supplies Department. 

    The team flew to Chengdu on May 19 and provided assistance in the implementation of infection control measures and environmental disinfection, and offered professional advice on water sanitation at Yingxiu Town, one of the areas seriously affected by the earthquake.

    Four of the team members returned to Hong Kong on May 23. The others returned to Chengdu yesterday and received a banner of appreciation from the Deputy Director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, Sichuan Provincial People's Government, Mr He Ping; and the Deputy Director of Sichuan Provincial Department of Public Health, Mr Zhao Xiaoguang; for their efforts made in the mission.
