Schools commended for meritorious green projects (with photos)
*******************************************************

Thirty-eight primary and secondary schools and kindergartens were commended today (May 24) at the prize presentation ceremony of the Greening School Project Award organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD). The commendations were in recognition of their meritorious green school projects and their contribution to environmental greening.

To promote green consciousness among students, the department's Greening School Subsidy Scheme provides subsidies to schools to plant more trees and shrubs in campus and to organise more greening activities, through which students' interest in and knowledge of greening can be enhanced. Awards are given to meritorious green school projects.

The Greening School Subsidy Scheme is well received as the number of participating schools has doubled since its introduction in 2000.

Speaking at today's prize presentation ceremony, a member of the Community Involvement Committee on Greening of Home Affairs Bureau, Dr Lawrence Chau Kam-chiu, said the scheme had been well received by teachers and students since its launch, with the number of participating schools increasing steadily, rising from around 300 in the first year to about 779 this year.

"The standard of green projects are on the rise. Both teachers and students are working very hard to make their schools' environment greener and more beautiful," Dr Chau said.

Other officiating guests at the ceremony were the Assistant Director (Leisure Services) of LCSD, Mr Eddy Yau Kwok-yin; the Principle Education Officer (Kowloon) of Education Bureau, Ms Chen Wai-ming; the advisers of Community Involvement Committee on Greening of Home Affairs Bureau: Mr Yeung Tsz-hei, Dr Yau Wing-kwong and Mr Chan Choi-hi.
