Cantonese Opera Advisory Committee appoints new members

    The Home Affairs Bureau today (May 19) announced the appointment of nine new members for the third term of the Cantonese Opera Advisory Committee (COAC). They are Mr Law Hang-tong (Mr Law Ka-ying), Mr Mo Yu-tin (Mr Sun Kim-long), Ms Lau Wai-ming, Prof Andrew Chan Chi-fai, Prof Yu Siu-wah, Dr Dorothy Ng Fung-ping, Mr Li Hon-kwong, Mr Lau Kam-yiu and Ms Choi Yuen-ling.  Dr Stephen Chow Chun-kay and 14 members are re-appointed as the chairman and members of the COAC respectively. 

    Members are appointed for a two-year term, effective from May 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010.

    A spokesman for the Home Affairs Bureau said it was hoped that the members for this new term could enhance communication between the Government and the Cantonese opera sector and continue to advise the Government on the promotion, preservation, study and development of Cantonese opera.  They are also to follow up on the items that have been discussed by members in the last term, including conversion of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre into a Xiqu activity centre, construction of an annex building for the Ko Shan Theatre, preservation programmes of Cantonese opera and promotion of Cantonese opera in tertiary, secondary and primary education.

    The COAC is an advisory body set up in 2004 to advise the Government on the promotion, preservation, study and development of Cantonese opera and to assist the Government in formulating policies to develop this traditional art form.
