A total of 2,008 Hong Kong and Mainland youngsters yesterday (March 23) joined hands in Zhongshan, Guangdong, to break a world record for making the heaviest Chinese almond cake.

Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose S K Lee, and Commissioner of Civil Aid Service, Dr Ernest Lee, were present to show their support when the youths attempted to set the new Guinness World Records to herald the hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games on the Mainland.

The world record effort was part of the Zhongshan-Hong Kong Youth Exchange Programme 2008, which has drawn more than 2,000 participants, including 1,090 youths from Hong Kong¡¦s Civil Aid Service Cadet Corps (CAS Cadet Corps), youth uniformed groups and the 18 districts.

The youth exchange programme, from March 22-24 in Zhongshan, was jointly organised by the CAS Cadet Corps, Hong Kong United Youth Association and Zhongshan Youth Union. It was aimed at encouraging the youth of Hong Kong and the Mainland to learn the Olympic spirits and share the vision of ¡§One World One Dream¡¨.

Weighing 155.2kg and measuring 1,068mm in diameter and 238mm in height, the gigantic almond cake bestowed the youths¡¦ blessings for the success of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games with a cheering slogan.

The young participants in the exchange programme also attended various events in Zhongshan to celebrate the Olympic Games such as gala dinner, national flag raising ceremony and visits to cultural and historic attractions. The tour in Zhongshan has fostered Hong Kong youths¡¦ understanding of developments on the Mainland and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The exchange programme is part of a series of events that the CAS Cadet Corps has organised to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
