New record for daily flight movements
*************************************

The daily flight movement record at the Hong Kong International Airport has been broken twice in two consecutive days. Air traffic control staff of the Civil Aviation Department handled a record 906 and 945 flight movements on Thursday (March 20) and yesterday (March 21) respectively, a spokesman for the department said today (March 22).

The latest record of 945 flight movements on March 21 well exceeded the daily average of 810 movements by 16.7%. 451 flight movements also operated through the Hong Kong Flight Information Region on that day, making up a total of 1396 flights handled by the Civil Aviation Department within the 24-hour period.

During this Easter holiday period, most of the extra flights operated by airlines were to destinations in Northeast Asia, Mainland China and Southeast Asia. Taipei was the most popular destination, followed by Fukushima and Okinawa.

Buoyed by the robust economy in the region, the increase in flight movements was attributed to the heavy demand during the Easter holidays. A strong growth was registered in air traffic operating both at the Hong Kong International Airport and through the Hong Kong Flight Information Region.

Last year, 295,582 aircraft movements were handled at the Hong Kong International Airport and 153,936 aircraft movements operated through the Hong Kong Flight Information Region. They represented respective annual increases of 5.4% and 10.2%.

"The Civil Aviation Department is encouraged by this new record. The steady growth in air traffic will strengthen Hong Kong's status as an international and regional aviation hub. As always, our Air Traffic Control staff are committed to providing a safe and efficient service to the travelling public," the spokesman said.
