Government improves slopes safety
*********************************

The Government is inviting tenders for landslip preventive works on about 40 government slopes and retaining walls on Lamma Island and at Tsing Yi and New Territories West.

A notice on the tender exercise was published in the Government Gazette today (March 14).

A spokesman for the Geotechnical Engineering Office of the Civil Engineering and Development Department said the works were expected to commence in May this year and would take about two years to complete.  The slopes and retaining walls will be maintained by various government departments after the completion of the works.

He said that the landslip preventive works would greatly enhance public safety in the areas.

The contract forms part of the works under the 10-year Extended Landslip Preventive Measures Project, which has been launched since 2000. The Government has a long term strategy to upgrade and maintain slopes in the slope catalogue.  It aims to complete the upgrading works for 2,500 sub-standard government slopes and to complete safety-screening studies for 3,000 private slopes between 2000 and 2010.
