Man jailed for assaulting public officer
****************************************

A man was sentenced by Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (March 13) to six months' imprisonment for assaulting public officers and two months' imprisonment for obstructing public officers in performing their duties.

The imprisonment terms will run concurrently.

Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officers were attacked by the man while carrying out an operation against illegal hawking on Harbour Road footbridge, Wan Chai, on March 11. Four of them were injured in the incident.

"Use of violence against public officers is not only wrong, but also carries legal consequences," a department spokesman said.

He urged the public to co-operate with law enforcement officers in the execution of their duties.
