Outbreak of influenza-like illness in primary school
****************************************************

    The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of an influenza-like illness affecting 29 students of a Kowloon Bay primary school.

    A CHP spokesman said the affected children, comprising 15 boys and 14 girls, aged from seven to 10, had developed symptoms of influenza-like illness, including fever, cough and sore throat, since February 16.

    Twenty-six of them consulted private doctors or out-patient clinics and one has been admitted to hospital. All of them are in stable condition.

    CHP officials have conducted field visits to the school and provided health instructions to staff.

    To prevent influenza and respiratory tract infection, people are advised to adopt the following measures:

*    Build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;

*    Maintain good personal hygiene, and wash hands after sneezing, coughing and wear a mask when developing symptoms of respiratory infections;

*    Maintain good ventilation; and

*    Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation, especially during peak influenza season.

    Members of the public, particularly children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult their doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.

    For more information on the disease, people may visit the CHP's website (www.chp.gov.hk).
