With more information accessible, there is growing expectation by patients towards the communication by healthcare professionals of their own treatment plan and progress. Effective communication can help enhance patients' confidence and compliance towards their treatment plan and the clinical outcome. Because of the importance of health communication, the Hospital Authority and the Communication Studies Department, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) have co-organised the 2008 Health Communication Series "Enhancing Communication in Health Care" to promote effective health communication.
The 2008 Health Communication Series is the first of its kind in the territory and the first session will be held next Friday (February 22). World-renowned health communication scholars have been invited to deliver keynote speeches. There will be also be six discussion panels for health professionals, health administrators, communication scholars, communication practitioners and representatives from patient support groups. A four-week exhibition of art and publicity works related to health communication will also be held at HKBU.
The programmes were tailored to address the roles and concerns of different healthcare providers, healthcare users and community and patient support groups. The topics include: communication among frontline healthcare providers and patients; relationship between healthcare organisations and patients support groups; crisis communication and management, and staff communication in healthcare organisations. The series will help facilitate experience sharing among healthcare providers, community and patient support groups to further improve health communication in the community.
Admission is free for all keynote speeches, discussion panels and exhibition. The public and healthcare professionals are welcome. The programme is attached for reference and available on the website www.coms.hkbu.edu.hk/health.
