Pok Oi Hospital New Building holds grand opening

    The opening ceremony of the Pok Oi Hospital (POH) new building was held today (February 14, 2008).  The ceremony was officiated by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Donald Tsang.  Other guests included Dr York Chow, Secretary for Food and Health; Mr Anthony Wu, Chairman of the Hospital Authority; Mr Shane Solomon, Chief Executive of the Hospital Authority; Mr Lau Wong Fat, Chairman of Heung Yee Kuk New Territories; Mr Leung Che Cheung, Chairman of Yuen Long District Council; Mr Matthew Lam, Chairman of the 58th POH Board of Directors and Chairman of POH Hospital Governing Committee; Mr James Chan Yum Min, Yuen Long District Officer of the Home Affairs Department; Mr Chan Ka Kui, Managing Director, Hsin Chong Construction Group Ltd. and Dr Albert Lo, Cluster Chief Executive, New Territories West Cluster of the Hospital Authority.

    To meet the increasing demand for health care in the New Territories West, the Government announced the redevelopment and expansion of POH in 1998, with capital funding of $2.1 billion.  The project was completed in March 2007, and offers advanced technology.  The completion of the project is the result of concerted efforts of many different parties.  The Government has always cared for and supported the residents of New Territories West.  Various units which have participated in the project, including the POH Hospital Governing Committee, POH Board of Directors, Architectural Services Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, District Council, POH colleagues and other parties have also shown their strong support throughout the redevelopment of POH.  Pok Oi Hospital has entered a new era with the grand opening of POH.  In the future, POH will fully utilise its newly built facilities to provide modern and quality health care for residents of New Territories West.

    Pok Oi Hospital was established in 1919, and has been serving as an important hospital for the Yuen Long community for more than 80 years.  The new POH commenced its various services in phases, and its acute services started in September 2007.

    The new POH will include a Pok Oi Ambulatory Services Centre of the New Territories West Cluster.  It will also be equipped with a Family Medicine Training Centre, New Territories West Diabetes Centre, Ambulatory Gynaecology Centre, Rheumatology Centre, Day Ward and Short Stay Ward.  The Specialist Out-patient service will also be enhanced. 

    Other services that will be provided include Medicine & Geriatrics Wards, Pathology Department, Community Health Centre, Diagnostic Radiology Department and Infirmary Service. 

    Pok Oi Hospital will also provide comprehensive allied health services including dietetics, speech therapy, clinical psychology, medical social services, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, a prosthetic & orthotic department and pharmacy.
