The three silvers and three bronzes recently won by six secondary students in the China Mathematical Olympiad 2008 (CMO) marked Hong Kong's best ever achievement in the competition.
Held between January 17 and 22 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, CMO 2008 was jointly organised by the China Mathematical Society Olympiad Committee and the Affiliated Middle School of Harbin Normal University. A total of 195 mathematically gifted secondary students from 34 teams participated in the Olympiad.
The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the Macau Special Administrative Region and Russia were specially invited to join provinces of China to take part in the competition.
The CMO aims to enhance students' standard of mathematics and motivation in learning, and to groom the mathematically gifted. It also serves to step up exchanges in mathematics education among the provinces and territories of China. Student participants were able to visit cultural relics and various sites in Harbin. Members of the Hong Kong team actively participated in sharing sessions to better acquaint themselves with the motherland, to boost their sense of national identity, and to strengthen their communication and inter-personal skills.
The Hong Kong team comprised members of the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme which was established by the Education Bureau in 2000 to provide structured enhancement programmes in mathematics and other learning areas to help students develop their potential to the fullest. The team members were selected from the International Mathematical Olympiad - Hong Kong Preliminary Contest under the scheme.
