Man given suspended sentence for assaulting public officer

    A man was sentenced by the Fanling Magistrates' Courts today (January 21) to two months¡¦ imprisonment, suspended for one year, for assaulting a public officer.

     The man, who dropped a cigarette butt on Choi Yuen Road, Sheung Shui, on December 3 last year, refused to co-operate and assaulted a Food and Environmental Hygiene Department officer when the officer took prosecution action.

     The man was fined a total of $2,000 for littering of a cigarette butt in a public place and failing to provide personal particulars and proof of identity for inspection. He was also sentenced to one month's imprisonment, suspended for one year, for obstructing a public officer in the execution of his duty.

     "Use of violence against public officers is not only wrong, but also carries legal consequences," a department spokesman said.

     He urged the public to co-operate with law enforcement officers in the execution of their duties.
