The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, today (January 16, US time) exchanged views on environmental protection with the Lieutenant-Governor of California, Mr John Garamendi. The meeting was on the first day of Mr Yau's visit to the west coast of the United States.
Later, at a luncheon co-organised by the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (San Francisco), Hong Kong Association of Southern California and Hong Kong Schools Alumni Federation, Mr Yau gave a keynote speech on "Hong Kong - Facing Up to an Environmental Challenge". The luncheon was attended by more than 70 business leaders and corporate managers.
This morning, Mr Yau met the Assistant General Manager of the Los Angeles Environmental Affairs Department, the Chair of the California Air Resources Board and professors of the Institute of the Environment at UCLA and was briefed on the city's implementation of air pollution control programmes and efforts in tackling climate change.
At the Milken Institute, Mr Yau exchanged views with the think-tank experts on measures to reduce regional air pollution as well as the impact of environmental concerns on business decisions.
Mr Yau also called on the Chinese Consul General in Los Angeles, Mr Zhang Yun.
