New appointments to Steering Committee on Innovation and Technology announced

    The Government today (January 12) announced the appointment of the following three new members to the Steering Committee on Innovation and Technology for a two-year term from today:

Dr Roy Chung Chi-ping, Deputy Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries;
Mr Fred Lam Tin-fuk, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council; and
Mr Paul Yin Tek-shing, President of the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong

     "Industry plays an important role in the development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong. The appointments of new members from industry associations and the Hong Kong Trade Development Council will facilitate the solicitation of views from industry and enhance coordination between the government, industry, academia and technology support organisations in promoting Hong Kong's technology development and industry upgrading," a government spokesman said.

     All existing members of the committee have also been re-appointed for a term of two years with effect from today, except for Mr Edward Cheng who is not able to serve on the committee for another term due to other commitments. "Mr Cheng has provided valuable contribution to the committee in the past four years and the Government has benefited from his wise counsel," the spokesman said.

     The steering committee was set up in January 2004 to advise on the formulation and implementation of innovation and technology policies and ensure effective coordination and synergy among different elements of the innovation and technology programme. The steering committee is chaired by the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development with members from relevant Government bureaux, academia, industry, and innovation and technology organisations.  

     The membership of the Steering Committee on Innovation and Technology from January 12, 2008, is as follows:

Mr Andrew Leung, Chairman of the Hong Kong Productivity Council;
Dr Patrick Wang, Chairman of the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company Limited;
Secretary for Education;
Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology); and
Commissioner for Innovation and Technology.

Prof Paul C W Chu, President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology;
