Correctional staff provide volunteer services to single elderly (with photos)
********************************************************

A total of 38 volunteers from the Correctional Services Staff Volunteer Group and their families today (January 12) helped some 40 elderly people in domestic cleaning and to paint their main door gates.

The elderly people, who live alone in Choi Hung Estate, wished to have a tidy home and their main door gates painted as part of their preparation for the Chinese New Year. Learning of their need, staff of the Correctional Services Department (CSD) volunteered to provide the service today.

The staff volunteer group, established in February 2005, has currently 1,338 members who are serving and retired officers and their family members. The group aims to extend members¡¦ spirit of care to the community through benevolent activities as well as promote volunteer work as a healthy leisure activity for staff.

In 2007, the group provided support in a wide range of volunteer activities including the Oxfam Trailwalker, a sports meet for people with disabilities, services for community centres, fund-raising, home visits and cleaning for the elderly, and carrying out repair work at homes for the elderly.

Also, some 140 members participated in October in a cycling ride while another 100 members provided services for crowd control during the event organised by the CSDCU Education Fund to raise education funds for children on the Mainland.
