Countryside visitors urged to prevent hill fires
************************************************

Hong Kong people were today (January 4) urged to actively protect the city's countryside and prevent hill fires.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, the winter monsoon will continue to bring dry weather to the region, with the lowest relative humidity ranging from 45% to 60% in the next few days, and this will increase the risk of hill fires.

"Hikers, picnickers and villagers are urged to handle fire with extra care," a government spokesman said.

He stressed that people should barbecue only at designated sites, and under no circumstances should a fire be left unattended.

It is an offence under the Forests and Countryside Ordinance to illegally light a fire in country parks and open countryside. Offenders are liable to a maximum fine of $25,000 and one year's imprisonment.

"Government departments will take enforcement action against any people who commit such offence," the spokesman said.

"While the Government is committed to the prevention of hill fires, our efforts won't be effective unless we have the full support and assistance of the public, " he said, urging people to play their part in conserving the beautiful scenery of Hong Kong's countryside.
