Tens of thousands of people poured into Sha Tin tonight (December 31) to take part in the New Year's Eve Countdown Carnival.
The carnival, presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department with the theme of SportsArt, began at 8.30pm and runs until 12.30am tomorrow (New Year's Day) at Sha Tin Park.
Blending traditional and contemporary circus with theatrical and dance techniques, two dancers in colourful costume from the Arabesque Aerial Theatre of the United Kingdom amazed audiences with their aerial dance and acrobatic performance.
Other performances and entertainment for public enjoyment included orchestral concerts, choral singing, jazz and cheering dance, live bands music, Argentine tango, artistic skating, rhythmic gymnastics, trampolining, rope skipping, and hip hop dancing.
The cinema screening sporting events in 3D; games stalls and illusion houses entertained carnival-goers with a new visual experience.
Songs by local singer-songwriters were entertaining, while roving entertainers amused visitors to the carnival with conjuring tricks and wished them a happy new year.
To celebrate the advent of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the hosting of the Olympic Equestrian Events in Hong Kong, seven lanterns of Fuwa Huanhuan on horseback, a mascot of the Beijing Olympics, were set up at the carnival to provide a photo opportunity for visitors.The 3D cinema showed some excerpts of equestrian events and there was also a laser show with sporting elements at the countdown.
