Public housing estates ready to switch to digital TV broadcasting
*****************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Housing Authority:

Tenants of 68 public rental housing (PRH) estates in most of the urban districts could enjoy Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) broadcasting from December 31.

To tie in with the phased DTT launched by the two domestic free television stations, the Housing Authority arranged upgrading work for the communal aerial broadcast distribution (CABD) system in its estates in two phases.

The first phase of the upgrading work was completed, covering a total of 56 public housing estates in Kowloon Peninsula, Hong Kong Island North and part of Sha Tin receiving signals from the Temple Hill Transmission Station. These estates, comprising 378 housing blocks, will start to receive digital TV signal transmitted from the Temple Hill Transmission Station from December 31. Please refer to Annex 1 for the list of estates.

Upgrading work was also completed for another 12 estates under phase 1, where some of the blocks in the estates are receiving TV signal from the Temple Hill Transmission Station.  These blocks can also receive digital TV signal from December 31. But for blocks receiving TV signal from other transmission stations, they can receive digital TV signal only when the other transmission stations are transmitting digital TV signal. Please refer to Annex 2 for the list of estates which can partially receive DTT by December 31.

Conventional terrestrial TV broadcasting will continue after the commencement of DTT. Tenants can choose to use existing TV sets and equipment to view charge-free programmes in analogue format provided by the four TV channels.

The upgrading work for the rest of PRH is scheduled to be completed by August, 2008. As for new estates completed in 2008 or after, the CABD system is ready for DTT reception.
