Observatory reports a cool November
***********************************

November 2007 was cooler and drier than usual. The mean temperature of 20.9 degrees was 0.5 degrees below normal. The total rainfall in the month was only 3.9 millimetres, about 11% of the normal figure of 35.1 millimetres. The accumulated rainfall since the beginning of the year was 1,691.2 millimetres, about 23% below the normal figure of 2,187 millimetres for the same period.

An intense northeast monsoon and a rainband over southern China brought cool and rainy weather to Hong Kong on the first two days of the month. There were sunny periods on November 3 when the rainband dissipated. Under the influence of the northeast monsoon, it was sunny and dry in the ensuing three days.

The weather turned cloudy on November 8 as the cloud band associated with Tropical Storm Peipah over the South China Sea reached the south China coast. Clouds dispersed on November 9 and the weather turned fine again. Apart from some haze on November 18 and 19, generally fine weather persisted in the next 16 days.

The northerlies strengthened on November 26 when a surge of the intense northeast monsoon reached southern China. In the ensuing three days, the weather became progressively cooler and very dry with the relative humidity falling below 40% in most places. Under windy and dry conditions, there were 16 reports of hill fires on November 27. Temperatures dropped to 13.7 degrees on November 28, the lowest in the month.

The weather stayed fine and dry on the last day of the month.

Four tropical cyclones occurred in the western North Pacific and the South China Sea in the month.

Details of the issuance and cancellation of various warnings/signals in the month are summarised in Table 1.1. Monthly meteorological figures and departures from the norm in November are tabulated in Table 1.2.
