Results of the 2006 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels

    According to the results of the 2006 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels released today (November 29) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (i.e. sales and other receipts) of hotels and boarding houses, restaurants, import and export trade, retail trade and wholesale trade increased by 19.0%, 12.0%, 8.8%, 8.7% and 7.1% respectively in 2006 as compared with 2005.  For all the above industries taken together, total receipts increased by 8.9% in 2006.

     In the hotels and boarding houses industry, total receipts amounted to $24 billion in 2006.  Gross surplus, which equals total receipts less total operating expenditure, accounted for 32.8% of total receipts in 2006, higher than that of 28.8% in 2005.  Value added of the hotels and boarding houses industry, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 21.8% over 2005 to $15 billion.

     In the restaurants trade, total receipts amounted to $71 billion in 2006.  Gross surplus accounted for 5.8% of total receipts in 2006, higher than that of 5.2% in 2005.  Value added increased by 12.3% over 2005 to $25 billion.

     In the import and export trade, total receipts amounted to $2,862 billion in 2006.  Gross surplus accounted for 6.7% of total receipts in 2006, lower than that of 7.8% in 2005.  Value added increased by 2.7% over 2005 to $314 billion.

     In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $254 billion in 2006.  Gross surplus accounted for 7.1% of total receipts in 2006, marginally lower than that of 7.2% in 2005.  Value added increased by 8.8% over that in 2005 to $39 billion.

     In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $180 billion in 2006.  Gross surplus accounted for 3.3% of total receipts in 2006, marginally higher than that of 3.1% in 2005.  Value added increased by 14.6% compared with that in 2005 to $14 billion.

     The attached table compares selected principal statistics by major industry group between 2005 and 2006.

     The survey was conducted from February to October 2007.  More detailed survey results will be given in the "Report on 2006 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels".  Users can download this survey report (in PDF format) free of charge at the website of the C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/index.jsp) as from early January 2008.  Details on the release of the print version of the survey report will be announced later.
