Results of the 2006 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services

    According to the results of the 2006 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services released today (November 27) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (including business receipts and other income) of the transport sector amounted to $467.7 billion in 2006, representing an increase of 11.9% over 2005.      

     The value added of the transport sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, amounted to $105.2 billion in 2006, representing an increase of 0.9% over 2005.

     The gross surplus of the transport sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, increased by 3.6% compared with a year earlier to $50.6 billion in 2006.  The gross surplus accounted for 10.8% of total receipts in 2006.

     Within the transport sector, the four largest major industry groups in terms of value added in 2006 were (1) air transport, (2) land passenger transport, (3) services incidental to transport, and (4) ocean and coastal water transport. They together accounted for 86.1% of the total value added of the whole sector.

     In the air transport industry, total receipts amounted to $92.6 billion in 2006. Value added decreased by 5.2% compared with 2005 to $29.3 billion. Gross surplus was $13.9 billion and accounted for 15.1% of total receipts in 2006.

     In the land passenger transport industry, total receipts amounted to $34.0 billion in 2006. Value added increased by 2.0% over 2005 to $21.8 billion.  Gross surplus was $9.0 billion and accounted for 26.4% of total receipts in 2006.

     In the services incidental to transport industry, total receipts amounted to $214.1 billion in 2006. Value added increased by 1.3% over 2005 to $21.1 billion. Gross surplus was $9.8 billion and accounted for 4.6% of total receipts in 2006.

     In the ocean and coastal water transport industry, total receipts amounted to $93.3 billion in 2006. Value added increased by 13.7% from 2005 to $18.3 billion. Gross surplus was $12.1 billion and accounted for 12.9% of total receipts in 2006.

     The principal statistics for the transport sector, with breakdowns by major industry group on transport and related services, are shown in the attached table.

     The survey was conducted from January to October 2007.  More detailed survey results will be given in the "Report on 2006 Annual Survey of Transport and Related Services".  Users can download this survey report (in PDF format) free of charge at the website of C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/index.jsp) as from December 2007.  Details on the release of the print version of the survey report will be announced later.
