S for S: Domestic violence taken seriously
******************************************

The Government has always taken a serious view of domestic violence cases, the Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose S K Lee, said today (November 26).

At a meeting of the Sham Shui Po District Fight Crime Committee today, Mr Lee said police would make prompt arrests and take out prosecutions as appropriate if evidence showed that a crime had been committed.

He said, "Police have been refining the procedures for handling domestic violence cases and strengthening frontline officers' investigation capabilities."

A multi-disciplinary collaboration approach has been adopted to deal with domestic violence in recent years. "Based on this approach," Mr Lee said, "Police have also stepped up communication with the Social Welfare Department on case referrals and district co-ordination.

"Our aim is to tackle such cases professionally and effectively and provide prompt and appropriate assistance to affected families, particularly the women and children involved."

In tackling the youth drug abuse problem, Mr Lee said a high level inter-departmental task force led by the Secretary for Justice would build on the existing crime-fighting and anti-drug network, review current measures, spearhead cross-bureau and inter-departmental efforts, and enhance collaboration among non-governmental organisations, stakeholders and the community, with a view to identifying areas of focus and enhancement.

Mr Lee attends meetings of different District Fight Crime Committees to exchange views with their members on law and order issues.
