*******************************************************

The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (November 20) the November 2007 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).

In this issue, two feature articles entitled "Labour Productivity Index for Major Economic Activities, 2000 to 2006" and "Marriage and Divorce Trends in Hong Kong, 1981 to 2006" are included.

"Labour Productivity Index for Major Economic Activities, 2000 to 2006"

Labour Productivity Index (LPI) is a very important economic indicator of an economy.  It shows how efficient labour input is used for generating real output and is very useful in analysing the contributions to various industries and the economy brought about by changes in labour productivity.  Factors affecting changes in LPI include changes in technology, organisational structures, management practices and capital, etc.

This feature article outlines the methodology and data sources for compiling LPIs in Hong Kong, and analyses the LPI for major economic activities during 2000 to 2006.

"Marriage and Divorce Trends in Hong Kong, 1981 to 2006"

Nowadays, it is increasingly common for men and women to stay longer in education and start work when they grow older, thus forming families at relatively older ages.  The median age at first marriage for men increased from 27 in 1981 to 31 in 2006 and for women, from 24 to 28 over the same period.  The number of registered first marriages of both parties had been falling during 1981 to 2005, but it rebounded slightly in 2006.  Meanwhile, the number of divorces increased continuously during this period and the number in 2006 was eight times that in 1981.  Remarriages also rose considerably over the same period.  This feature article provides a detailed analysis on the marriage and divorce trends in Hong Kong from 1981 to 2006.

Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
