The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) will hold a series of activities, including an exhibition and five public seminars, between next Tuesday and Thursday (November 20-22) at the Hong Kong Central Library to commemorate the department's 40th anniversary.

Carrying the theme "Quality Statistics - Key to the Future", the exhibition and public seminars aim to promote the importance of quality statistics and how these statistics help map out the blueprint of the future.

The three-day exhibition will be held at Exhibition Gallery 5 of the Hong Kong Central Library in Causeway Bay, starting from 9.30am daily from next Tuesday to Thursday.

A spokesman for the department said today (November 16), "Visitors of the exhibition will be able to gain hands-on experience on how to make full use of the website of the department and its e-services."

"A film describing the social and economic changes in Hong Kong over the past 40 years will be shown periodically during the exhibition.

"To facilitate visitors in understanding the exhibits, professional statisticians will be on site to explain and answer questions," the spokesman said.

Five public seminars on different statistical topics will also be held at the Lecture Theatre of the Hong Kong Central Library during the same period. Topics of the seminars are:

*  From a Fishing Village to a Metropolis - Revelations from Population Statistics
*  Tracking the Economic Situation of Hong Kong - National Income Statistics
*  Hong Kong - A World-class Trade and Business Service Centre
*  Sample Surveys - How to be a Smart Data User
*  The Changing Labour Force in Hong Kong

The first three sessions will be held from 10.30am to noon from Tuesday (November 20) to Thursday (November 22), while the final two sessions will be held from 3pm to 4.30pm on Tuesday (November 20) and Wednesday (November 21).

All the seminars will be conducted in Cantonese with free admission. Advance seat reservation can be made by phone on 2116 5114 or filling in the registration form at http://www.censtatd.gov.hk.

The Census and Statistics Department was established in 1967. It has held firm on its abiding drive to serve the community by providing quality statistical services, which contribute to a large extent to the social and economic advances of Hong Kong.

"We hope the exhibition and the seminars are able to help the public gain a better understanding of the uses and interpretation of various kinds of statistics so that they can apply them more effectively in daily businesses and avoid being misled by unreliable data or wrong interpretations of data," the spokesman said.

People may also call 2116 5114 or visit the website http://www.censtatd.gov.hk to obtain further information on the activities.
