Conductor Jimmy Chi-bun Chiang, who won the renowned Lovro von Matacic International Competition of Young Conductors in Zabreb, Croatia in September, will be the guest conductor of three concerts with the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra in Hong Kong next month.
Also taking part in the concerts will be talented young violinists Richard Chen, Cheung Ting-wai, Athena Law, Moses Chan, Chik Yiu-ting and Calvin Cheng, and cellist Teddy Chow. The programme features Saint-Sa?ns' ¡§Concerto for Violin No.3 in B Minor, Op.61 (1st Movement)¡¨ and ¡§Havanaise¡¨, Bruch¡¦s ¡§Concerto for Violin No.1 in G Minor, Op. 26 (1st Movement)¡¨ and ¡§Concerto for Violin No.1 in G Minor, Op. 26 (3rd Movement)¡¨, Ravel¡¦s ¡§Tzigane¡¨, Hua Yanjun¡¦s ¡§Reflections of Moon on the Waters¡¨(arranged by Yang Baozhi) in violin solo, and Lalo¡¦s ¡§Concerto for Cello in D Minor (3rd Movement)¡¨ in cello solo.
Music Director Dr Yip Wai-hong and seven young musicians will share the joys and tribulations of their music learning experience at the concerts.
Hong Kong-born conductor Jimmy Chi-bun Chiang studied at the University for Music and Dramatic Arts in Vienna in orchestral conducting (Leopold Hager) and choral conducting (Erwin Ortner). Chiang was invited to participate at the Rohm Music Festival in Kyoto, Japan, in 2003, where he studied with Maestro Seiji Ozawa. Other mentors included Conrad Leitner, Daniel Sternberg and Yip Wai-hong.
Chiang won the ¡§B?renreiter Urtext Preis¡¨ at the Third International Competition for Young Choir Directors in Vienna in 2004. He has collaborated with the Arnold Sch?nberg Chor of Vienna, the Oradea Philharmonic (Romania) and the Ensemble Amadeus Waco (US), of which he was the founder and director.
Chik Yiu-ting, Richard Chen, Moses Chan Yu-hei, Cheung Ting-wai, Athena Law, Teddy Chow and Calvin Cheng are young artists aged from 12 to 16, who have taken part in competitions in Hong Kong and overseas and have won many prizes. Most of them have been awarded professional diplomas and certificates in music. Yiu-ting, Richard and Moses are members of Yip¡¦s Strings Class, while Athena and Teddy are members of the Hong Kong Children¡¦s Symphony Orchestra.
The Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra aims to promote music among the general public in Hong Kong. The orchestra has frequently invited famous conductors and soloists to perform, and has successfully introduced a repertoire of serious music and Chinese orchestral music.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra¡¦s ¡§Young Musicmakers¡¨ concerts will be staged at 8pm on December 7 (Friday) at the Theatre, Sheung Wan Civic Centre; and at 8pm on December 8 (Saturday) and 3pm on December 9 (Sunday) at the Theatre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre. Tickets priced at $60 and $90 are now available at URBTIX outlets, while senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients are offered 50% off (limited quotas for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
