The Census and Statistics Department and the Civil Service Training and Development Institute co-organised a two-day lecture series for senior management under the "Science in the Public Service" campaign last Monday (October 29) and today (November 6).
Over 100 directorate and senior officers in government attended the lectures and took part in the exchange of ideas.
Delivering the keynote speech, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Frederick Ma, said, "Through the discussion started on the various scientific research and application issues in the 'Lecture Series for Senior Management', I hope we can come up with new ideas in our future interaction with different sectors, professionals and researchers within and outside the government. This will bring our service level to a new height."
Speaking at the same occasion, the Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Mr Fung Hing-wang, said, "During the lecture series, colleagues can learn more about other departments' latest scientific applications and are encouraged to exchange ideas. The lectures also serve as a useful reference when we promote the relevant scientific understanding to the public in future."
During the lectures, professionals from various departments explained their scientific work, and elaborated the importance of their work on policy making. Topics discussed include climate change, science and diagnosis of genetic diseases, genetic screening of the newborn, online from wireline to wireless in mobile communication technology, biometric applications in immigration, application of scientific sample surveys, advanced information and communications technology applications for government departments, Hong Kong internet infrastructure, combating air pollution and micro-climate studies for sustainable public housing development in Hong Kong.
Participants have useful exchanges through questions raised on the various topics.
