Outbreak of influenza-like illness in a kindergarten

    The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of influenza-like illness that affected 24 children in a kindergarten in Kwai Chung.

     A spokesman for the CHP called on the public and management of institutions to take preventive measures against the disease by observing strict environmental and personal hygiene.

     CHP's investigation revealed that the 24 children - 10 boys and 14 girls aged from 3 to 5 - had developed influenza-like illness, including fever, cough, sore throat and runny nose since October 15.

     All of them consulted general practitioners, out-patient clinics or emergency department. Two of them were admitted to hospitals, one to Hong Kong Baptist Hospital and one to Yan Chai Hospital, and were discharged.

     Staff of the CHP have conducted field visits to the school and provided health instructions to the staff.

     The kindergarten was put under close watch.

     To prevent influenza and respiratory tract infection, the public are advised to adopt the following measures:
* Build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
* Maintain good personal hygiene, and wash hands after sneezing, coughing and wear a mask when developing symptoms of respiratory infections;
* Maintain good ventilation; and
* Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation, especially during peak influenza season.

     People, particularly children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult their doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.
