The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health is investigating an outbreak of influenza-like illness affecting 22 boys in a primary school in Central District.
A spokesman for the CHP called on the public and management of institutions to take preventive measures against the disease by observing strict environmental and personal hygiene.
CHP's investigation revealed that the students, aged from 6 to 11, had developed an influenza-like illness, including fever, cough and sore throat since October 27.
Of them, 21 consulted general practitioners or out-patient clinics. One was admitted to a private hospital in Hong Kong Island. He is now in stable condition.
CHP has taken a sample from the respiratory tract of a patient and is waiting for laboratory test results.
Staff of the CHP have conducted field visits to the school and provided health instructions to school staff.
CHP has put the school under close watch.
To prevent influenza and respiratory tract infection, people are advised to adopt the following measures:
* To build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
* To maintain good personal hygiene, and wash hands after sneezing, coughing and wear a mask when developing symptoms of respiratory infections;
* To maintain good ventilation; and
* To avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation, especially during peak influenza season.
People, particularly children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult their doctors for medical advice promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.
For more information on the disease, people may visit the CHP's website (http://www.chp.gov.hk).
