Pork of dubious origin seized at Sha Tau Kok
********************************************

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) and the Police in a joint operation this morning (November 1) seized about 170 kilograms of pork suspected to be of dubious origin.

Officers intercepted a private car at the Shek Chung Au check point in Sha Tau Kok at about 8am and found the pork inside eight plastic bags in the car. A woman arrested during the operation is assisting investigations.

An FEHD spokesman said that anyone possessing meat not of lawful origin for sale has committed an offence and was liable to a maximum fine of $50,000 and six months' imprisonment.

He said the department would continue to closely monitor the sale of meat at retail level and take stringent enforcement action to safeguard food safety and public health.

"Anyone who has doubts about the origin of meat being sold at retail outlets should call the department's hotline at 2868 0000," he said.
