The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (October 22) the October 2007 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).
In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Air Cargo Statistics", "Comparing Hong Kong's International Investment Position with Selected Economies, 2006" and "Chain Volume Measures of Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product" are included.
"Air Cargo Statistics"
The Hong Kong International Airport is one of the busiest and most advanced airports. It firmly establishes Hong Kong's position as a hub of commerce and plays a very important role in the development of Hong Kong as a logistics centre. In terms of international air cargo throughput, the Hong Kong International Airport continued to rank first among all airports in the world in 2006. This feature article provides a detailed analysis of the air cargo statistics of Hong Kong from 2001 to 2006.

"Comparing Hong Kong's International Investment Position with Selected Economies, 2006"
International investment position (IIP) is a balance sheet showing an economy's stock of external financial assets and liabilities at a particular point in time.
This feature article compares the IIP statistics of Hong Kong for the year 2006 with those of selected economies, which include Australia, Canada, the mainand of China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
At end-2006, Hong Kong's net IIP was US$533.9 billion. This indicates that Hong Kong was a net creditor economy. This figure compared favourably with the net IIP statistics of the selected economies.

"Chain Volume Measures of Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product"
The change in the volume of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is widely used as an important macro-economic indicator of the real growth of the aggregate economic activity of an economy.
The C&SD released for the first time the chain volume measures of GDP to replace the previous constant price series on 18 October 2007.
This feature article introduces the concepts and compilation method of the chain volume measures of GDP and highlights the revision to the historical estimates of the real growth rate of GDP and its components.
