Eighty local sand sculptors showed their creativity today (October 14) in a competition at Lido Beach, Tsuen Wan, and shared their experience with a team of expert sand sculptors from Japan.
In the Tsuen Wan District Sand Sculpture Competition and Sand Sculpture Exchange Programme 2007, organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, apart from displaying their inspirations and talents, the sand sculptors cultivated their team spirit.
Participating in this year's competition were 16 teams - eight teams in the open division, three in the children's division (aged 12 or below) and five in the youth division (aged 19 or below).
Each team had to finish its work within two hours in an area of about three metres by four metres.
Magnificent sand sculptures adorned the beach when the competition finished, exhibiting the sculptors' creative ideas and craftsmanship.
Judging was based on creativity, skills, relevance to the themes and aesthetic. Winners of today's competition were:
Open division: "Fallen" by "Sandsfreaks";
Children's division: "A Vivacious Sea Lion" by "SDU" of S.K.H. Tsing Yi Chu Yan Primary School;
Youth division: "The Love of Mother" by Tsuen Wan Junior Police Call.
"Fallen" by "Sandsfreaks" was also awarded "The Most Creative" award and the overall championship.
The Kagoshima Hioki City Team of Japan was invited to Hong Kong to demonstrate their skills in today's event. The lively and stunning work entitled "A Boar" was inspired by the Year of the Boar and expressed best wishes to the people of Hong Kong.
