CSD conducts search operation in Shek Pik Prison
************************************************

Correctional officers today (October 13) conducted a special searching operation in Shek Pik Prison (SPP).

A total of 48 officers including 38 from the Escort and Support Group were deployed in the operation which was mounted as an effective measure in prison management. Surprise searching operations serve to combat illicit activities and to ensure a safe custodial environment for persons placed under CSD custody.

The search was carried out smoothly. Unauthorised articles seized from the institution's workshops and dormitories included oranges, tea, self-made items such as plastic ruler, earpicks, cigarette holders, chess, chess boards as well as a few tiny metal scraps.

A prisoner was put on disciplinary report under Prison Rule 61 for possession of articles without authority. Investigation is still under way.

Commenting on the operation, a department spokesperson said CSD was committed to providing both a drug-free and crime-free environment to all people in CSD custody. "We take every measure to forestall any possible possession of unauthorised articles and to eradicate any presence of dangerous drugs in penal institutions," the spokesperson said.

The department conducted three other special searching operations in 2007.
