Hong Kong's Latest Foreign Currency Reserve Assets Figures Released

The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority :

     The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (Monday) that the official foreign currency reserve assets of Hong Kong amounted to US$140.8 billion at the end of September 2007 (end-August 2007: US$138.3 billion) (Table 1).
 
     Including unsettled forward contracts, the foreign currency reserve assets of Hong Kong at the end of September 2007 also stood at US$140.8 billion (end-August 2007: US$138.3 billion).

     Hong Kong is the world's ninth largest holder of foreign currency reserves based on the latest published figures, after Mainland China, Japan, Russia, Taiwan, Korea, India, Brazil and Singapore (Table 2).

     The total foreign currency reserve assets of US$140.8 billion represent about seven times the currency in circulation or 36% of Hong Kong dollar M3.
