Inmates contest computer inputting competition (with photos)
************************************************************

A total of 242 inmates from 22 penal institutions of the Correctional Services Department (CSD) participated in an inter-institutional computer inputting competition today (October 7).

The competition, co-organised by the CSD and Christian Prison Pastoral Association, was held in computer rooms of various institutions.

Acting Assistant Commissioner (Rehabilitation), Mr Lee Sheung, said the aim of the competition was to encourage inmates to pursue computer study and facilitate their re-integration into society by enhancing their employability.

He said the department established computer training facilities in various institutions in past few years in a bid to step up information technology training for inmates. He added that Chinese and English input skills were important for those pursuing studies or seeking jobs after release as computers were now essential parts of daily life.

Mr Lee encouraged participants to keep up with their effort and make the best preparation for the new life after release, regardless of their performance in the competition.

With the department's Rehabilitation Division approaching its 10th Anniversary in January, 2008, a series of rehabilitation-related publicity events will be rolled out in the coming months to seek public acceptance of and support for offender rehabilitation. The Inter-institutional Computer Inputting Competition was part of the campaign. Other upcoming activities include the Rehabilitation Fair, NGO Service Day, Symposium on Employment for Rehabilitated Offenders, TV Variety Show, Workshop on Assessment and Treatment of Violent Offenders, rehabilitation-related publicity activities at District Level as well as lyrics and songs competition.
